So a friend has recently got a new USB-C SSD and from all views the drive was working as expected. However, when trying to create a virtual machine on this drive Hyper-V would complain and report in an error saying failed to realize.
Trying the same drive on my machine did not show the same problems and worked as anyone would expect. So a quick google came up with people reporting to create the VM on the C drive and then move it across, any attempt at moves also failed.
People then started to say that it was not possible to create VMs on a USB drive which again, knowing I could I knew this to be incorrect.
As a side test, I asked my friend to create a virtual drive on his USB drive and this worked successfully…strange but ok…..let’s try creating a VM. We tried creating the VM and it worked without issue!
Moral of the story, if you get failed to realize then create a virtual drive on your USB drive and should this work, try creating your VM again and may, just maybe this will work for you.
